Panama awards environmental studies for three hydro projects

A Panama regulator has awarded contracts for environmental impact studies of three hydroelectric projects proposed for Panama’s Gatu River.

Administrator General Victor Urrutia of Panama’s Autoridad Nacional de los Servicios Publicos said the agency took bids August 28 from firms to perform studies over 12 months. (HNN 7/3/07)

Firms winning study contracts, their bids, and the projects to be developed include:
o Panama Power Energy Inc., US$400,126, 19.5-MW Lalin 1, Gatu River at El Penon, Los Hatillos, and San Francisco in Veraguas Province;
o Panama Energy Finance Inc., US$200,126, 38.6-MW Lalin 2, Gatu River at La Yeguada and Calobre in Veraguas; and
o Panama Energy Business Inc., US$400,126, 25.4-MW Lalin 3, Gatu River at Chitra y Gatuncillo, Calobre, and Santa Fe in Veraguas.

Once the studies are completed as required by the environmental agency, Autoridad Nacional del Ambiente, water concessions are to be awarded for the projects.
