Panama developer seeks bids to build 29-MW Barro Blanco

Developer Generadora del Istmo S.A. (Genisa) seeks bids to build the 29-MW Barro Blanco hydroelectric project on Panama’s Tabasara River. Bids are due September 15, 2009.

The European Investment Bank has been considering a proposal to finance the hydro plant up to 40 million euros (US$56.5 million). (HydroWorld 5/29/09) Panama regulator Autoridad Nacional de los Servicios Publicos (Asep) awarded a concession in 2007 to Genisa, which bid US$750,000 for the project.

The project consists of construction and operation of a run-of-river plant with associated daily regulation reservoir. Genisa has conducted a full environmental impact assessment of the project, including public consultation.

The developer seeks bids for engineering, procurement, and construction of the project including final design, engineering, supply, transportation, construction, start-up, and operation and maintenance training. The contract is expected to require 36 months.
