Paraguay awards IMPSA upgrade contract for 121-MW Acaray 2

Paraguay utility Administracion Nacional de Electricidad (ANDE) has signed a contract with Argentina’s Industria Metalurgicas Pescarmona SA (IMPSA) for refurbishment of the 121-MW Acaray 2 hydroelectric project on the Acaray River.

The US$11 million contract includes repowering of turbine-generators 3 and 4, which will increase installed capacity to 150 MW from 121 MW, IMPSA said in a statement reported by Argentina news agency Telam. (HNN 4/18/07)

Acaray is the only hydroelectric project that Paraguay operates on its own, others being shared with Argentina and Brazil. ANDE operates the project, in Alto Parana Department, which supplies more than 15 percent of Paraguay’s electricity needs.

IMPSA said it won the contract in competition with Alstom, Voith Siemens Hydro Power Generation, and Brazil’s Sadefem.
