Peru seeks 500 MW from new hydroelectric projects

Peru’s private investment agency seeks bids to supply 500 MW from new hydroelectric projects with delivery beginning between 2016 and 2018. Applications for qualification are due November 29, followed by offers January 27, 2011.

Agencia de Promocion de la Inversion Privada (ProInversion) issued a similar solicitation in 2009. It said the latest solicitation is to offset an increase in thermal power projects.

ProInversion now seeks power supply bids from companies having definitive or temporary concessions to develop hydroelectric projects. It plans to award contracts to one or more bidders covering up to 500 MW of regulated market demand with an additional margin of 20 percent. For the purpose of supplying power, the winning bidder or bidders are to build a new hydroelectric project.

Data available on San Gaban, Molloco projects

ProInversion said it would make available technical and economic information on hydro projects of San Gaban and Molloco so they may be studied and possibly be developed to participate in the solicitation.

Peru utility Empresa de Generacion Electrica de Arequipa S.A. (Egasa) filed an environmental impact statement in 2009 for the 302-MW Molloco hydro complex on the Colca River, including two power plants, 144-MW Llatica and 158-MW Soro.

Utility Empresa de Generacion Electrica San Gaban S.A. (EGE San Gaban) completed the 110-MW San Gaban 2 project, sometimes simply called the San Gaban project, in 1999 on the San Gaban River. Peru’s Ministerio de Energia y Minas extended the construction schedule and increased the permissible capacity in 2008 for the 150-MW San Gaban 1 project. EGE San Gaban took bids in 2007 for a pre-feasibility study of the 105-MW San Gaban 3 project. The ministry granted a concession in 2008 to Swiss Hydro to perform a feasibility study of the 204-MW San Gaban 4 project.
