Portugal’s water agency, Instituto da Agua (Inag), seeks proposals for concessions to build the 163-MW Fridao, 78-MW Almourol, and 48-MW Alvito hydroelectric projects. Bids are due July 16.
Fridao is to be built on the Tamega River, with Almourol planned for the Tejo River and Alvito for the Ocreza River. They are among ten new projects, and five hydro project expansions, included in Portugal’s national program of dams with high hydropower potential, Programa Nacional de Barragens com Elevado Potencial Hidroelectrico.
Bid documents, in Portuguese, may be obtained in digital format from the address below upon payment of 3,000 euros (US$4,624).

Auction of seven other projects under way
Inag previously called for proposals by June 17 for concessions to build the 77-MW Pinhosao project on the Vouga River and 72-MW Girabolhos on the Mondego River (HNN 4/23/08) and proposals by June 30 for concessions to build 112-MW Gouvaes, 113-MW Padroselos, 90-MW Alto Tamega, and 109-MW Daivoes, on the Alto Tamega River. Energias de Portugal (EDP) won a concession to build the tenth project, 234-MW Foz Tua, and operate it on the Tua River for 75 years. EDP, the sole bidder, said it would pay 53.1 million euros (US$82.5 million) for the concession.
The five hydro project expansions in the national program are 248-MW Picote 2 (HNN 11/14/07), 191-MW Bemposta 2 (HNN 3/19/08), 240-MW Alqueva 2 (HNN 4/23/08), 170-MW Baixo Sabor (HNN 3/20/08), and 70-MW Ribeiradio. (HNN 2/7/08)
