Portugal utility awards construction contract for 243-MW Picote 2

Utility Energias de Portugal S.A. (EDP) has awarded a 46 million euro (US$60.1 million) contract for construction of the 243-MW Picote 2 hydroelectric project on Portugal’s Douro River.

EDP said it signed the civil works contract March 20 with a consortium of Obras Publicas e Cimento Armado and Moniz da Maia, Serra &Fortunato � Empreiteiros.

The total 130 million euro (US$170 million) Picote 2, an expansion of the existing 231-MW Picote project, includes a powerhouse cavern; chambers, galleries, and tunnels of the hydraulic circuit, cofferdams, and access tunnels. The project is to begin producing power in late 2010 and be completed in 2011.

EDP has requested bids by May 2 for turbines, generators, command and control systems, and other equipment for the project. (HNN 3/22/07) It expects to award a contract in October.

EDP said the investment is part of its program to increase investment in renewable energy. It plans similar work on the 178-MW Bemposta project on the Douro River.
