Portugal utility awards contract for pumped-storage hydro project civil construction

Utility Energias de Portugal (EDP) awarded Reforco de Potencia da Barragem de Venda Nova III – ACE a 131 million euro (US$179 million) contract for civil construction of the 435-MW Venda Nova 3 pumped-storage hydro project in Portugal.

The Venda Nova 3 pumped-storage hydro project is being developed on Portugal’s Rabagao River. Completion of the hydro project is projected for 2014.

EDP completed the 194.2-MW Venda Nova 2 project in 2005 at the Venda Nova Dam. (HRW September 2007)

The Venda Nova 3 contract calls for engineering and construction works pertaining to tunnel, powerhouse chamber, surge shaft and intake construction, as well as all other preparatory and related work for the project.
