Portugal utility seeks construction of 178-MW Bemposta 2

National utility Energias de Portugal S.A. (EDP) seeks bids for civil construction of the 178-MW Bemposta 2 hydroelectric project on Portugal’s Douro River. Bids are due September 17.

EDP plans to build a new underground power station to utilize additional hydropower potential near the site of the 240-MW Bemposta project, built in 1964. Civil works include a powerhouse cavern; chambers, galleries, and tunnels of the hydraulic circuit; cofferdams; and access tunnels. Work is to require 46 months.

Bidding documents may be obtained in digital format from the address below for 2,500 euros (US$3,200).

In March, EDP awarded a 46 million euro (US$60.1 million) contract for construction of the 243-MW Picote 2 project also on the Douro River. (HNN 3/23/07) A consortium of Obras Publicas e Cimento Armado and Moniz da Maia, Serra &Fortunato � Empreiteiros is to build an expansion project similar to Bemposta 2 near the site of the existing 231-MW Picote project.
