Pre-qualification invited to build Bolivia’s 80-MW Misicuni

Bolivia utility Empresa Nacional de Electricidad (ENDE) invites applications for pre-qualification to build the 80-MW Misicuni multipurpose hydroelectric project. Responses are due January 31, 2011.

ENDE also extended a deadline for expressions of interest from consultants to provide technical supervision of construction. The new consultant response date is December 22.

The Inter-American Development Bank (IADB), which is lending US$101 million for the project, recruited consultants in April to revise designs of Misicuni, which is to be built in Bolivia’s Cochabamba Valley. The water and irrigation portion of the project is being financed by the government of Italy, the Prefecture of Cochabamba, Bolivia’s National Treasury, and the Andean Development Corp.

Consortium Consorcio Hidroelectrico Misicuni, led by Grandi Lavori Fincosit S.p.A. of Italy, was named in 2009 to build 120-meter-tall Misicuni Dam. ENDE and South Korea’s Korea Electric Power Corp. previously signed an agreement to build the hydro plant, then estimated at 120 MW.

ENDE now invites applications for pre-qualification to build a tunnel extension, tunnel liner, surge shaft, safety valve, penstock, powerhouse with two 40-MW Pelton turbines, and a re-regulation reservoir. The utility plans to issue a solicitation to pre-qualified firms in March 2011.

Pre-qualification documents, in Spanish, may be obtained from the address below. Applications for pre-qualification are due January 31, in a sealed envelope labeled “Solicitud de precalificacion para la Contratacion del Diseno, Suministro y Construccion de las Obras de la Central Hidroelectrica Misicuni.”
