PT Inco awards generator rehab for Indonesia’s 167-MW Larona

PT International Nickel Indonesia Tbk. (PT Inco) has awarded a US$26 million contract to Andritz VA Tech Hydro to supply replacement equipment for the 167-MW Larona hydroelectric project.

VA Tech Hydro is to supply, install, and commission two new 85-megavolt-ampere generators, protection and excitation equipment, and balance of plant to Larona, which was built in 1978 on the Larona River in Indonesia’s South Sulawesi Province. (HNN 4/2/07)

VA Tech Hydro is to install and commission the new equipment during a very short shutdown of melting furnaces at PT Inco’s production facilities. The first unit is to be supplied by the end of May 2009 and to go on line in November 2009. The second unit is to go on line in early 2010.

In 2005, VA Tech Hydro received an order to supply turbine-generators and penstocks for PT Inco’s 90-MW Karebbe hydroelectric project, being built on the Larona River in South Sulawesi. (HNN 10/2/07)

Larona and the 109-MW Balambano project, built in 1995, supply power for PT Inco ore processing and nickel matte production. Karebbe is to join them on completion in 2010.
