Putin christens new unit at Sayano-Shushenskya hydropower project

KHAKASSIA, Russia 1/20/12 (PennWell) — Restoration of Russia’s Sayano-Shushenskaya hydroelectric plant took another step forward as Prime Minister Vladimir Putin put a new unit into service during a recent ceremony.

Sayano-Shushenskaya reported that the unit was installed several weeks ago.

The unit — designated as Unit No. 1 — is important as it marks the facility’s first new unit Although restoration work has been ongoing ever since an accident killed 75 and flooded a turbine hall in 2009, Unit No. 1 is the first that wasn’t simply restored.

Equipment manufacturer Power Machines of Russia will now launch three new units (including replacements for four refurbished units) annually until 2014, with the result being that each of the plant’s remaining units are replaced. Power Machines won the contract for this work in November 2009.

When fully refitted in 2014, the hydropower plant will have a capacity of 6,400 MW.
