South Africa invites pre-qualification for 1,333-MW Braamhoek

South African utility Eskom Holdings Ltd. invites applications for pre-qualification for three separate civil works contracts to build the 1,333-MW Braamhoek pumped-storage project. Responses are due December 4 and 5.

Final design for Braamhoek, in the Little Drakensberg mountains northeast of Van Reenen, is in progress and scheduled for completion in 2007. (HNN 10/26/06)

Construction site infrastructure

Pre-qualification is invited by 10 a.m. December 4 to build infrastructure for the construction, operation, and maintenance of Braamhoek, on the border between Free State and KwaZulu-Natal. The scope of work includes liquid waste disposal, minor roads, temporary offices, laboratories, guest houses, potable water supply, terracing, and fencing.

Contractors must be South African owned and managed.

Upper dam, lower dam, bridge

Pre-qualification is invited by 10 a.m. December 5 to build the upper dam, lower dam, and a bridge downstream of the lower dam. The upper dam is a 41-meter-tall, 810-meter-long concrete-faced rockfill dam. The lower dam is a 38.5-meter-tall, 620-meter-long roller-compacted-concrete dam. The bridge has not been designed, but is likely to be reinforced concrete, approximately 8 meters wide by 15 meters’ span.

Contractors must be South African owned and managed, but may bid in joint venture with international partners.

Pre-qualification is invited by 10 a.m. December 5 to build the underground works, including adits, water transfer tunnels, and powerhouse complex. Works include intake canal and structure, headrace tunnels, surge shafts, pressure tunnels, four penstocks, draft tubes, tailrace tunnel, outfall and canal, machine hall, transformer hall, four turbine-generator pits, tunnels, construction adits, cable and pipe galleries, and interface with electro-mechancal contractors.

Contractors must be South African owned and managed, but may bid in joint venture with other construction companies.
