Sweden utility awards rehab contracts for 100-MW Hojum

Vattenfall AB has awarded contracts to two companies to rehabilitate a turbine and generator at the 100-MW Hojum hydroelectric plant on the Gota Alv River at Trollhattan, Sweden.

Vattenfall plans to refurbish Unit G-15, one of two turbines at Hojum, which the utility operates with a nearby plant, 135-MW Olidan. Refurbishment of the unit is to begin in August 2008 and be completed in June 2009.

GE Energy (Sweden) AB received one contract to upgrade a Kaplan turbine to handle a flow of 210 cubic meters per second, up from 190 cms, and to increase efficiency.

Alstom Hydro Sweden AB received a generator contract. It is to upgrade the unit to 66 megavolt-amperes from 52 MVa. The contract also includes new bearings, brackets, a rotating exciter, and internal cooling system.
