Tunnel work begins at Vietnam’s 180-MW Dong Nai 3

Vietnam hydropower builder Cavico Corp. has begun tunnel construction at the 180-MW Dong Nai 3 hydroelectric project in Vietnam’s Dong Nai River Basin.

Cavico, lead contractor for the tunnel works, said work began on a 1,025-meter headrace tunnel of 9.2 meters in diameter. Cavico’s work on the US$195 million project is valued at US$6.25 million.

Owned by Electricity of Vietnam, Dong Nai 3 is located in Bao Lam village of Lam Dong Province, 280 kilometers north of Ho Chi Minh City. Construction began in 2004 and is to be completed in 2009.

Last year, four government-owned commercial banks agreed to lend 6 trillion dong (US$375 million) to build Dong Nai 3 and 340-MW Dong Nai 4. (HNN 8/7/06) Each project involves construction of a roller-compacted-concrete dam.
