Two hydro projects win Projects of the Year awards at HydroVision Brasil 2014

The editors of HRW-Hydro Review Worldwide and Hydro Review magazines congratulate the two winners in the 2014 Hydro Projects of the Year awards program, presented last week during HydroVision Brasil in Sao Paulo.

The 2014 Hydro Projects of the Year winners are:

— Teles Pires, owned by Companhia Hidreletrica Teles Pires, for environmental aspects. The 1,800-MW Teles Pires project, on the Teles Pires River in Brazil’s Mato Grosso and Para states, is under construction. A series of programs was developed to prevent, mitigate, control and monitor environmental and social aspects of the project. The resulting Environmental Basic Project (PBA) program is a management tool that aims to ensure compliance with the commitments made by Companhia Hidreletrica Teles Pires regarding proper environmental management of the project and compliance with environmental legislation. Forty-four programs are being carried out under the PBA, ranging from fish rescue in areas affected by cofferdams to monitoring side slope stability under risk of erosive processes.

The award was accepted by Maira Fonseca da Cunha, environment manager for Companhia Hidreletrica Teles Pires.

— Tucunare, owned by Eletronorte, for innovation. This project involves a plan to install a 1-MW hydrokinetic turbine downstream of the 8,370-MW Tucurui power plant on the Tocantins River in Brazil’s Para State. The turbine will have a diameter of 14 m and use water spilled by the Tucurui plant. Numerical simulation, basic project assessments, and estimation of the hydrokinetic potential of the site have been completed. A company has been contracted to build and install the turbine.

Accepting the award on behalf of Eletrobras/Eletronorte and Brasilia University were Antonival Lima de Albuquerque, Francisco de Assis Avila Faria, Antonio Cesar Pinho Brasil Junior and Carlos Augusto Gil.

HydroVision Brasil was held Oct. 21-23 at Sao Paulo’s Transamerica Expo Center. The conference and exhibition is part of the larger Power Brasil Event, which includes POWER-GEN Brasil and DistribuTECH Brasil. PennWell do Brasil Holdings Ltda., a subsidiary of PennWell Corporation, organizes these events.
