U.K. center reissues call for wave, tidal energy test stand

The New and Renewable Energy Centre (NAREC) of the United Kingdom has reissued a call for pre-qualification to build test stand equipment for wave and tidal energy prototypes at the NAREC Test Facility at Blyth on northern England’s eastern coast. Applications for pre-qualification are due by December 21, 2009.

NAREC is an independent center for development, testing, and commercialization of next-generation technologies for global renewable energy. It proposes to create a national hub for the industry in Blyth, expanding the NAREC test campus. With funding from the Department of Energy for Climate Change, NAREC plans a 3-MW facility to test wave and tidal energy devices on shore before they are ready for sea deployment.

NAREC previously called for bids in November for design, manufacture, installation, and commissioning of equipment including a “Dynamometer” type test stand, 3-MW input power from a four-quadrant inverter/converter drive/motor combination. (HydroWorld 10/26/09) The original tender included nine lots covering data acquisition, cooling system, gearbox, force application system, drive shaft and couplings, test piece mounting structure, electrical system, control system, and construction design.

The latest solicitation covers four lots including an input gearbox, force application system, drive shaft and couplings, and electrical system. The estimated maximum cost of the work is 6.2 million pounds (US$10 million).

Expressions of interest to request pre-qualification documents are due by 11:59 a.m. December 21 via the One North East eTendering system, www.onenortheast.bravosolution.co.uk.
