U.S. awards gate fabrication contract for Montgomery Locks and Dam

Steward Machine Co. Inc. has received a $4 million contract to fabricate replacement gates for the Corps’ Montgomery Locks and Dam on the Ohio River near Beaver, Pa.

The Corps’ Pittsburgh District took bids for the work in September and, in a separate solicitation, took bids in August to install the gates.

Steward, of Birmingham, Ala., is to fabricate and deliver the new vertical lift gates and chains for Montgomery. Work is to include all metalwork fabrication, shop assembly and delivery.

The 78-year-old Montgomery is one of two major types of gated dams in service in the Corps’ Pittsburgh District to permit increased control over the navigation pool upstream. Free Flow Power Corp. applied in March for a Federal Energy Regulatory Commission hydropower license for the 42-MW Montgomery Locks and Dam (No. 13768) project at the site.
