U.S. plans industry day for dam safety construction at Isabella Dam

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has scheduled an industry day to discuss a major dam safety modification project at Isabella Dam on California’s Kern River. Registration is by Oct. 15 for the Oct. 20 event.

Built in 1953 as a flood control and water conservation structure, Isabella Dam is being studied for remedial actions to prevent possible failure during earthquakes. Isabella Dam is the site of the 11.95-MW Isabella project (No. 8377).

The Corps awarded a contract last year to Santos Excavation Inc. to perform stone processing and aggregate testing at the site. It also took bids in 2013 for geophysical surveying and for development of a hydraulic model of Isabella Dam.

The Corps’ Sacramento District now invites the construction community to attend an industry day from 8-10 a.m. Oct. 20 in Bakersfield, Calif., to improve industry’s understanding of Corps requirements, answer questions on the Isabella Dam project and to understand how the construction community can support the project.

The Corps plans to seek a contractor to rehabilitate dams and spillways including raising two embankments 16 feet with foundation excavation and dewatering operation. Other work is to include a new emergency spillway with significant blasting and excavation of 3 million cubic yards; processing excavated material to use as filter, drain and concrete aggregates; construction of a concrete labyrinth weir; modifications to existing and construction of new concrete structures; an on-site concrete batch plant; abandonment/demolition of an outlet works; and relocation of recreation areas.

The work is valued at $250 million to $500 million.

A solicitation notice may be obtained from the Federal Business Opportunities Internet site, www.fbo.gov, by entering Solicitation No. W91238INDUSTRYDAY in the “Keyword/Solicitation #” box.

Those planning to attend must register by e-mail to the address below by Oct. 15. Additionally, the Corps seeks responses to a questionnaire included with the solicitation notice by e-mail to the address below by Oct. 15.
