U.S. seeks transformer, electrical upgrades at 1,076.6-MW Bonneville Dam

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers seeks bids to perform transformer and electrical equipment upgrades at the first and second powerhouses of 1,076.6-MW Bonneville Dam in Oregon and Washington. Bids in two solicitations are due Sept. 5 and 22.

The Corps’ Portland District recently awarded a contract to American Babbitt Bearing Inc. to supply hydro turbine guide bearings for Bonneville’s First Powerhouse. It awarded a contract last year to Precision Machine and Supply Inc. to repair the turbine of Main Unit 11 in Bonneville’s Second Powerhouse. It also awarded a contract to Transformer Services Inc. to refurbish step-up transformers at the Second Powerhouse.

In a solicitation set aside for small businesses, the Corps now seeks bids by Sept. 5 for a potential transformer upgrade at the Second Powerhouse. The purpose of the work is to improve main unit circuit breaker synchronization by moving the synchronizing signal from the 230-kilovolt side of the generator step-up transformers to the 13.8-kV side. Work includes furnishing and installing four new 13.8-kV potential transformer cubicles including potential transformers, isolated-phase bus and control wiring.

Valued at $1 million to $5 million, the work is to be performed during limited outages over two years.

In an unrestricted solicitation, the Corps seeks bids by Sept. 22 for replacement of main unit circuit breakers and instrument transformers at Bonneville’s First Powerhouse. The purpose of the work is to improve reliability and operability for the main unit and transfer bus breakers as well as station service equipment. Work includes removal and replacement of 480-volt switchgear, 13.8-kV switchgear, 13.8-kV disconnect switches, surge equipment, 13.8-kV bussing, 2.4-kV bussing, 13.8-kV/2.4-kV transformer, 13.8-kV/480-volt transformers, 2.4-kV/208-volt/120-volt transformer and other equipment.

Valued at $25 million to $100 million, the work is to be performed during limited outages over three years.
