U.S. to seek turbine runners for 2,078-MW Hoover

BOULDER CITY, Nev., U.S. 5/16/12 (PennWell) — The Bureau of Reclamation plans to seek bids to supply four impulse turbine runners for 2,078-MW Hoover Dam on the Colorado River in Arizona and Nevada.

The Bureau said it expects to issue a solicitation for the equipment about July 1 with bids to be due about 30 days later. The agency requested information in February on firms capable of performing the work.

Reclamation awarded a $3.3 million contract in January to Voith Hydro to design, manufacture, and deliver a vertical Francis wide-head-range turbine runner for Hoover’s Unit A8.

Reclamation said it plans to seek bids for computational fluid dynamics, manufacture, and delivery of two runners with associated parts for Hoover’s Arizona Unit A0 and two runners and parts for Hoover Nevada Unit N0. The Pelton units are to have 63-inch pitch diameter and are to include 16 buckets, single-piece, centrifugally cast, and machined by a numerically controlled five-axis or more mill.

U.S. to seek turbine seal rings for Hoover, Davis, Parker projects

The Bureau of Reclamation plans to seek bids for replacement turbine seal rings at the 2,078.8-MW Hoover, 255-MW Davis, and 120-MW Parker dam hydroelectric projects on the Colorado River.

A request for proposals is expected to be issued about Dec. 5, 2009, with bids to be due about Jan. 5, 2010.

BuRec has been performing modernization work for several years at Hoover in Arizona and Nevada, Davis in Arizona, and Parker in California. (HydroWorld 8/3/07) Most recently, the agency called for information on design and supply of replacement turbines at Hoover. (HydroWorld 11/7/09)

BuRec plans to seek new seal rings, ranging from 90 inches to 207 inches in diameter, to be installed on various-sized Francis turbines ranging up to 130 MW. Each task order is to be valued at between $5,000 and $200,000, with a total contract estimated at $5 million over five years.
