UPDATE – DR Congo extends telecom bidding for Inga-based power market

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has extended the deadline for bids for a 2,200-kilometer telecommunications system linking the DRC’s Inga hydroelectric complex, other power plants, and load centers of the hydropower-based Southern Africa Power Market Project (SAPMP). Bids now are due April 23.

Bids previously were due March 17 and January 29. (HNN 1/15/09) With World Bank financing of US$178 million, DRC’s utility, Societe Nationale d’Electricite (SNEL), plans to procure equipment and services for work under the SAPMP program to deliver power from the 350-MW Inga 1 and 1,424-MW Inga 2 hydro projects, which are to be rehabilitated and expanded on the Congo River. SNEL currently seeks supply of a telecommunications system in three lots:
o Lot 5-1: Supply of 2,200 kilometers of cables between the site of Inga and the city of Kasumbalesa on the Zambia border, tender No. 201/SAPMP/BCECO/DPM/JPKM/2008/MF;
o Lot 5-2: Installation of 2,200 kilometers of fiber optic cables between Inga and the city of Kolwezi, between the 248-MW Nseke (or Seke) hydroelectric project and Kasumbalesa, tender No. 202/SAPMP/BCECO/DPM/LT/2008/MT; and
o Lot 5-3: Supply and installation of electronic components of telecommunications, tender No. 203/SAPMP/BCECO/DPM/HMS/2008/MT.
