Ethiopia’s Ministry of Water Resources invites expressions of interest from consultants to examine the interaction of groundwater with surface water in the Tana and Beles subbasins, site of the 460-MW Beles hydroelectric project, under construction on the Beles River. Responses are due January 22, 2009.
The government received US$45 million from the World Bank for the Tana and Beles Integrated Water Resources Development Project, which is intended to develop enabling institutions and investments for integrated planning, management, and development in the Tana and Beles subbasins to accelerate sustainable growth. It plans to recruit other consultants and suppliers for the water resources program. (HNN 12/11/08)
The current solicitation is for consultants to perform a detailed investigation of the groundwater resources in the Tana-Beles area, including its interaction with Lake Tana.

A report on the Tana and Beles Integrated Water Resources Development Project listed institutional weaknesses in the basin that need to be addressed to ensure growth in the basin is economically, environmentally, and socially sustainable. Among activities in the basin is construction of the Beles hydro project, which will have a substantial effect on flows from Lake Tana and in the Beles River, the report said. (HNN 1/23/07)
The ministry plans to seek other consulting services including integrated water resources information, environmental monitoring, a decision support system for water resources planning and management, and preparation of new investment. It also plans to seek goods, works, and other services including information technology; communication, weather, monitoring, and laboratory equipment; vehicles; boats; earth-moving equipment; buildings; and related work.
