U.S. seeks firms for RCC berm at 135-MW Center Hill

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers seeks information on firms capable of constructing a roller-compacted-concrete berm to reinforce an earthen saddle dam at 135-MW Center Hill Dam in Tennessee. Responses are due Oct. 17.

The Corps took bids in May for geotechnical engineering services in its Nashville District, primarily at Center Hill and at 270-MW Wolf Creek Dam in Kentucky. It awarded a dam safety contract in 2011 for a seepage barrier at Center Hill.

The Corps’ Nashville District now seeks information on firms capable of performing additional dam safety construction work at Center Hill in DeKalb County, Tenn. The Corps plans to seek blasting and excavation of foundation rock, grouting, and construction of the RCC berm immediately downstream of the water-retaining saddle dam.

Work would include excavation of about 5,000 cubic yards of rock up to 20 feet deep, a dual line grout curtain, and blanket grouting with estimated total grout of 100,000 cubic yards. The RCC berm would be about 100 feet high and 900 feet long with up to 200,000 cubic yards of concrete.
