USSD workshops set for November in Oakland

The United States Society on Dams 2015 Fall Workshop conference and training event is scheduled for Nov. 2-4, in Oakland, Calif. The workshops will address important issues faced by U.S. and international dam engineering professionals.

The following four committees will address specific issues:

Construction and rehabilitation
This committee will focus on managing construction risks and estimating construction costs.

This workshop will present accepted project risk management techniques for dam project design and construction and involve hands-on exercises using existing case studies to provide practical learning for workshop attendees.

Monitoring dams and their foundations
This committee will focus on appropriate instrumentation for dams; developing and implementing properly focused, cost-effective monitoring programs.

Dam decommissioning
The Dam Decommissioning workshop will provide participants with a hands-on review of the new USSD Guidelines for Dam Decommissioning Projects and a field trip to San Clemente Dam on the Carmel River about 15 mi southeast of Monterey in Monterey County, Calif.

This workshop is co-sponsored by USSD and the Association of State Dam Safety Officials in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers with support from other members of the U.S. Levee Safety Coalition.

USSD and ASDSO, with support from the US Levee Safety Coalition, will host coordinated workshops on levee safety during September and November. The workshops will provide updates on key initiatives related to levee safety policy, risk communication and technical guidance, including National Levee Safety Program implementation and emerging international activities and partnerships. The first workshop will be hosted by ASDSO on Sept. 17 during Dam Safety 2015 in New Orleans. The second workshop will be hosted by USSD during the fall workshop.

After successfully completing workshops, participants are eligible to earn professional development hours and attendees who are part of the Colorado State University system are eligible to earn continuing education units from its Division of Continuing Education.
