Voith, Alstom manufacturing Latin America’s largest rotors for Teles Pires hydroelectric project

Manufacturers Alstom and Voith have begun producing a hydropower rotor for Brazil’s 1,850-MW Teles Pires hydroelectric project which, the companies said, will be Latin America’s largest rotor when complete.

The rotor will weigh 260 tons and measure 5 meters tall and 8.8 meters in diameter, making it larger than units in both the 8,370-MW Tucurui and 14,000-MW Itaipu hydroelectric plants.

The companies will supply a total of five rotors for Teles Pires — all of which will be manufactured in Alstom’s (FR: ALO) factory in Taubate.

The Teles Pires project is being constructed on the Teles Pires River along the border of Brazil’s Para and Mato Grosso states.
