WAPDA begins mechanical trials of 121-MW Allai Khwar hydroelectric project

Pakistan’s Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has begun mechanical runs of its 121-MW Allai Khwar hydroelectric project with power generation beginning by the end of the month.

Allai Khwar — built on an Indus River tributary of the same name — includes an 88-meter-long by 51-meter-tall concrete dam, a 2.3-kilometer-long steel-lined tunnel and two 61.5 MW hydro turbines.

WAPDA said Allai Khwar is expected to begin commercial operation in the first week of March.

The project is the second of three WAPDA high-head hydroelectric complexes that have been developed in recent years. Also included are the 72-MW Khan Khwar, which went online in November 2010, and the 130-MW Duber Khwar, which WAPDA said will commissioned soon.

HydroWorld.com also reported earlier this month that construction of WAPDA’s 122-MW Keyal Khwar plant is set to begin in April.

The new hydro projects are part of WAPDA’s “least-cost energy generation and water storage plan”, which could eventually include as many as 26 new hydropower complexes and 21 GW of installed capacity.
